Outgoing President Declan Brady

Having served diligently as President for over three years, Declan Brady has stepped down as ICS President. Mike Hinchey has been appointed President having served on the ICS council.

We’d like to take this opportunity to reflect on the past three years and thank Declan warmly for his contribution to the Irish Computer Society.

Under his presidency, we haven’t stood still. There are many highlights of the past three years, including the introduction of three new societies: itSMF Ireland, Business Analysts Association of Ireland and Blockchain Association of Ireland. Membership of all seven societies has also tripled in the past three years.

Under Declan’s watch, our standard-setting European Data Protection Officer course was launched. The first cohort of ECDPO graduates completed the course this year. New grades, more closely reflecting the changing needs of the data protection sphere have been introduced.

Declan also oversaw our 50th Anniversary celebrations in 2017. The year was full of special celebrations and culminated in a gala dinner at Clontarf Castle in October last year.

The ICS Foundation has also gone from strength to strength under Declan’s guidance. We’ve launched and established IT Professional day, highlighting the value IT pros give to Irish society as well as Tech Week which tens of thousands of school children participate in each year.

New President Professor Mike Hinchey

We would like to welcome Professor Mike Hinchey as the new ICS president. He is also the President of IFIP (International Federation of Information Processors).

He is Professor of Software Engineering at the University of Limerick and the former Director of Lero – The Irish Software Research Centre. Prior to his time at Lero Prof Hinchey was Director of the Software Engineering Laboratory at NASA Goddard Space Flight Centre in Greenbelt, Maryland. He remains as a consultant to NASA.

His work with NASA was implemented in various space projects and will be incorporated in future missions. Particular areas of software research for Professor Hinchey include Formal Methods, Autonomous Systems and Software Reliability.

Look out for Mike's vision for the future of the IT profession in the December edition of TechPro.
