CITP Application Process

Stage 1 - Application

This stage can take up to 7 weeks

You will need to supply the following information as part of your application to provide evidence that you have worked for at least 3 out of the last 5 years in IT roles involving a challenging range of complex work activities with full accountability, that you have significant influence and responsibility, and demonstrates that you have well-developed business skills.

  • Your current CV / resume
  • An Applicant SFIA Statement (download a copy here)
  • A personal statement detailing your experience (required only if this information is not covered in sufficient detail in your CV) / resume).
  • Payment by credit or debit card
  • Details of one or more supporters who can validate your application.


A supporter can be your employer, a client, or a colleague, and must be sufficiently familiar with your work over three of the last five years to have a reliable opinion of your competence and provide specific work related examples. Note: University/ College tutors will not be accepted as supporters. You should seek your supporter’s approval prior to providing contact details. Your application will be reviewed before you are invited to take part in further assessment stages. In the unlikely event that your application is unsuccessful at Stage 1, we will refund the application fee in full. For full details of our refund policy please visit Overview of CITP.

On receiving the application, a peer review of your CV and supporter information will be conducted to establish that you are of the required level. If you are unsuccessful at this stage, you will be awarded the most appropriate grade of ICS membership and any difference in fees will be refunded.

Stage 2 - Breadth of Knowledge Test

Normally booked and taken within 4 weeks

The second stage involves a formal testing of core knowledge across the breadth of IT. The test comprises 75 multiple choice questions which cover a broad range of sectors and topics.

You must achieve a pass mark in each of the individual categories, as well as an overall pass. If you do not pass at your first attempt, one re-sit will be allowed within a six month period.

Stage 3 - Assessment Interview

This stage can take up to 6 weeks

You will be expected to provide a short presentation and speak for about 10 minutes, using examples from work for which you have been personally responsible to demonstrate your professional competence in your area of IT specialism.

You will be interviewed by 2 assessors, at least one of whom will have knowledge and experience of your specialism, and the presentation and interview will last no longer than 45 minutes. The process will be carried out online using the conferencing software and secure document portals.

Successful applicants

You will be awarded Chartered membership of the Irish Computer Society and will receive a Certificate of Current Competence, valid for 5 years. After 5 years you will need to renew your Certificate of Current Competence. You will retain your Chartered membership and your CITP post nominals as long as you remain a member.
