The Irish Computer Society and the ICS Privacy Forum would like to invite you to the 2nd Annual Data Protection Conference on Thursday, March 25th at the Radisson BLU Hotel, Golden Lane, Dublin 8. The topics this year will include Data Security and Data Retention. The conference will be officially opened by Billy Hawkes, Data Protection Commissioner in Ireland.
This conference is ideal for those involved in the management, storage and processing of personal information and also for those who are in regular contact with client or employee personal information. Speakers will include: Billy Hawkes | Data Protection Commissioner Opening Address Billy Hawkes has been Data Protection Commissioner since 2005, when he was appointed by the Government for a five-year term. Prior to his appointment, he worked as a Civil Servant in a number of Government Departments, including Finance, Foreign Affairs and Enterprise, Trade and Employment. Bruce Schneier | BT The Future of the Security Industry (via video link from California)IT is rapidly becoming a commodity. More companies are outsourcing their IT infrastructure -- treating it as a service more like electricity, office cleaning, or tax preparation -- and this has profound implications for IT security. Organisational users care less about the technical details of security. Products and services change their focus from the end user to the outsourcer. Industry consolidation results, as non-security IT infrastructure companies seek to bolster their security credentials. Even the profession changes, as jobs move from individual organizations to the outsourcing companies, and in some cases overseas. This talk looks at the future of IT security in a mature IT infrastructure industry. Dr. Alma Whitten | Google An Engineer's Vision for Internet PrivacyAlma Whitten will provide an overview of Google's engineering approach to privacy. Google offers services to hundreds of millions of people around the world. Some of those, like Gmail, are used by signing in with a Google account and password. Others are used without any authentication. Dr Whitten will explain what types of information Google stores when people use each type of service. She will also explain why Google needs that information and how is is used to protect and improve Google's services. Linda Ni Chualladh | An Post Finders Weepers, Keepers Weepers: Sometimes you just have to say goodbye. Honestly, how much personal data does your office retain? How long has it been there? Why do you have it? Do you even need it? In this presentation we consider the rules on data retention under Data Protection laws but we also consider horizontally-impacting laws which may require you to retain personal data and other data for specific periods, some of which are very long. Understanding what you have, why you have it and whether you need it are the important first steps in being able to say goodbye to the friendly files which could soon become your enemy. Las Kelly | Bank of Ireland Group Security Security in 3rd Parties The majority of companies contract 3rd parties to provide different services, from full IT or Business Process outsourcing to office cleaning. Security is not usually a primary consideration when establishing these contracts, yet considerable amounts of sensitive data can be sent to these 3rd parties for processing or accessed by 3rd parties when on company premises. This may lead to security breaches and data losses. Peter Oakes | Compliance Ireland Presentation TBABrian Honan | BH Consulting Data Breach – What Next?Data breaches can happen to anyone at anytime. Yet too often organisations seem unprepared in how to react when they do happen. This talk will outline how best to prepare for a data breach and what to do should one happen. Muireann O'Dea | Bearing Point Privacy Impact Assessments Privacy impact assessments (PIAs) are an established approach to assessing the privacy impacts of new initiatives. This talk will describe some of the recommended approaches to carrying out PIAs based on guidelines available in other countries. It will look at the potential benefits and limitations, and describe the experience of doing a PIA on recent Health Sector projects.
